Look Well to this Day

Updated: Nov 23, 2019

Look well to this day,
For it and it alone is life.
In the brief course
Lie all the essence of your existence:
The glory of growth
The satisfaction of achievement
The splendor of beauty
Yesterday is only a dream,
And tomorrow is but a vision.
But today well lived,
makes every yesterday a dream of happiness,
And each tomorrow, a vision of hope.

I love this quote. It embodies everything I have been trying to practice in my life. I'm a worrier. I tend to worry about how things will work out. Or more accurately, how they won't. I have learned a lot over the last few years about trusting. Life took a turn that I didn't see coming and that can produce a lot of worrying. I have had to learn to live in the present because I now see that the future is unknown and I only have today to live well and if I do, it will make the past one that I remember with fondness.

'For it and it alone is life.'

Since the beginning of our relationship, my husband and I have wandered bookstores for date night. We have been known to spend several hours browsing. On our many epic road trips we've taken as a family, one of the first things we do is find the local used bookstore. On my last birthday I found I had a couple hours to myself in the middle of the day. I decided to spend it in a used bookstore. I decided to 'look well' to the day and spend it finding joy...

in the pages of books. At one point I had about twenty books I was carrying around the store with me. Finally, I sat down and sorted through them and I came away with these selections. I bought the two on the right, only for their covers. I love buying books just because they are beautiful. Seriously, I have never even heard of this author. They look like they are right up my alley though, so I hope to enjoy them. I have found so much inspiration for my reading life on Instagram - here are a few of my favorites. What are yours?
